Fashion at the Met Gala: The Model As Muse

Stars, designers and models came out to the Met Costume Institute Gala whose theme this year was "The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion". Unlike awards ceremonies that are always so safe the Gala is always a place of more risque fashion choices, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Now lets see who wore what!

One big trend this year was all the short dresses. I loved the Marchesa dress Bar Rafaeli wore, Giselle Bundchen, who can do no wrong, wore a metallic Versace mini, and Daria Werbowy wore Balmain. In the sea of metallics Diane Kruger stood apart in her white Chanel dress.

There were some dresses that didn't hit the mark. I was not a fan of Anne Hathaway's Marc Jacobs dress, or her hair for that matter. The mod 60's look was not flattering and made her look old. Nor did I like the turban on Kate Moss (also in Marc Jacobs). I know she's a style icon but between that and the shoes it made the whole look monotone.

Many stars chose to go the sleek and chic route. One of my favorites was Katy Perry in Tommy Hilfiger simply because it was the opposite of what I've come to expect from her. Ashley Olsen wore her own line the Row, both Kate Hudson and Kate Bosworth looked fantastic in Stella McCartney.

As always with these types of dresses they tend to look cliche and boring at an event like the Met Gala. Though Blake Lively showed off her fabulous figure in the Versace number I was not a fan of the asymmetrical sleeves. Cindy Crawford was also disappointing in another Versace creation. Eva Mendes, in Calvin Klein, and Eva Longoria, in Diane von Furstenberg, were pretty but there was nothing special about these designs.

The rest of the women at the Gala went with a romantic look. The poster child for this was Elizabeth Hurley in her Elie Saab gown with beautiful floral details. I was hoping someone would where the dress back when I blogged about it in my haute couture post. Other members of this club were Jessica Biel and Claudia Schiffer both in Versace. Heidi Klum wore a layered J.Mendel gown.

It pains me to say this because she usually looks stunning but I did not like Kate Beckinsale's Marchesa gown. There were too many sparkles and the lower waist line made the proportions of the dress look a bit off. I don't know if it was the ruffles and bad fit of her dress or the braid in her hair but I thought Tyra Banks was one of the worst dressed of the night.

Finally there were those that took the word costume to heart. There was Rihanna who resembled Micky Mouse in Dolce and Gabbana, Leighton Meester the come to life harlequin in Louis Vuitton, Mary-Kate Olsen the witch of the west in Christian Lacroix and last but certainly not least Madonna as a hard core Tinkerbell.

Let me know what you think...did you like the Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton looks? Did you think Versace ruled the night with three beautiful dresses?

Thanks for the recap! I agree with your comments. What on earth happened with Anne Hathaway's hair?? Love Diane Kruger's Chanel dress and the first 3 model dresses in general. I also like Ashley Olsen's number and Claudia Schiffer's gown. The rest is pretty predictable. Tyra is awful, so is Cyndi's. Madonna's look is just a bit 'trying too hard'. Yes, I think by now everyone knows she's being sponsored by LV. I've never been much of a Marc Jacobs fan, so it's no surprise his outfits (whether it's MJ or LV) aren't really winning me over this time either :)
