The Fashion Show Recap: Episode 1

The Project Runway knock off has arrived. The Fashion Show with hosts Isaac Mizrahi and Kelly Rowland debuted tonight and I must say it makes me miss Heidi's auf Wiedersehen. The element that I did like however is that every episode is going to include a runway show where fashion execs and buyers get to voice their opinions on the pieces. Now for the recap...

Much like Top Chef the show started out with a "quickfire" challange. Contestants had to make a creative outfit from a simple black t-shirt in one hour. As expected lots of black dresses emerged from this, some more successful than others. Three "winners" Merlin (real name), Keith and Johnny R got to choose teams to create a collection of five looks around one must have item.

Here's where the show breaks apart for me. Merlin's team picks a bolero jacket as their must have piece, Keith picks a convertible tight brown skirt, and Johnny R goes with harem pants. None of these qualify as a must have piece. I don't own any of them and honestly I don't feel that I'm missing out. The execution was even worse than the ideas themselves. The harem pants were wider than Hammer's original pants, the brown skirts were so tight that even tiny models couldn't even fit into them and could barely walk down the runway, the bolero jacket stuck out in the back but compared to the horror of the other looks was voted as the top collection.

Of the bolero looks two were considered as best in show. Merlin's look was a navy and red bubble skirt that actually looked pretty cute. The other was James-Paul's look, a black dress with an assymetrical skirt. The interesting thing is that James-Paul, who spoke extensively about being inspired by squares, used to work for Vivienne Westwood and there's no denying that his look was very similar to Westwood's designs. You can judge for yourself below.

Drumroll for the winners and losers...
Winner: James-Paul
Loser: Jonny, a men's fashion designer who created a trully slutty top and unwearable skirt

Here are some pieces inspired by the show :) The original winner is on Bravotv.com

People are totally panning this show! I am still wanting to check it out, though. There are so many fashion shows these days, and you could easily fill a WHOLE reality fashion channel, don't you think? :) BTW- cute cute Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair skirt.

Completely agree with you, I think MTV is coming up with one too...In the end with any of these shows, its all about the designs, I don't want to judge from one episode so we'll see how it goes but I was not impressed

Oh extra food for thought, the dress that won is being sold on Bravo as "The Rubiks Cube" dress and Vivienne Westwood's is "The Square" dress, ironic coincidence :)
