Fashion Matchmaking

Have you ever bought something and never worn it? You were there in the store, looking at a skirt with a print that didn't work with anything in your closet, or that super trendy item that has a shelf life of 5 minutes? I know I've been guilty, but over time I've figured out a way to limit these instances so here's a first post really devoted to fashion matchmaking :) And there'll be more to come in the coming weeks...

The number one thing I've learned after years and years of shopping: only buy what you love! It sounds so simple but it's amazing how easily we can fall into that trap of "it's on sale" or "it's ok if it doesn't fit perfectly". These are all excuses that I've used as a result of which I now have a pair of black pants I can only wear with an over size t-shirt :) Unless wearing that dress, top or skirt is going to put a smile on your face it's not worth the cash. More often than not this means when I shop I bring 10 items to the dressing room and end up buying one or two pieces. But these are items I'm happy to wear from season to season. I've had this Development bubble dress for three years and I look forward to the summer each year to get to wear it again.

I'm not saying don't buy any trendy items. My favorite purchases this year have been latex tights and ripped leggings. But remember unless you love the way you look in that outfit and unless you love the way you feel in it, you're probably not going to wear it more than once. Next week I'll focus on trends. Oh and that's my tiny yorkie in the second pic :)

And if you've had similar experiences please share in the comments :)

The Fashion Show Recap: Episode 8

In the 8th episode of the Fashion Show we're down to seven designers.

So what was the mini challenge? A fashion history quiz. It's a very sad showing with all but two designers eliminated on the first question. Anna won by answering two questions. After seeing that most designers had no idea about their fashion history it was time for the elimination challenge. Their job was to pay tribute to iconic designers while keeping their signature style. The designers to emulate? Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Madame Greys, Pucci, Gianni Versace, Coco Chanel and Halston.

As the mini challenge winner Anna got to pick a designer for herself and assign designers to others. Surprisingly or not surprisingly this is where the claws came out. Sweet Anna was very strategic assigning Merlin and Reco designers they knew little about, and James Paul with a designer that's diametrically opposed to his aesthetic.

What did the designers come up with?
Merlin was assigned Madam Greys, a designer he never heard of, but with James Paul's help he created a teal colored goddess dress, flowy, with a pleated bodice that resembeled the icons style.
Reco was given Halston and even though he was told Halston didn't do corsets Reco did it anyway. The dress ended up being the opposite of modern and in that way the opposite of Halston.
James Paul was assigned Pucci and in his interpretation he kept the print for a blouse but added draping that's so typical to him, and paired it with a black skirt.
Anna chose Coco Chanel for herself, and created a great black and white dress with pleats on the skirt and a boxy bright purplish jacket that distracted more than added to the outfit.
Haven was given Yves Saint Laurent whose work she knew pretty well. She decided to create a pants suit that was horribly ill fitting and looked nothing like YSL's sexy suits.
Johnny got assigned Gianni Versace and I really liked Johnny's dress, it was modern, with leather panels and a full skirt and traditional to Versace some hardware.
Daniella got Christian Dior and she immediately thought of the classic Dior jacket, cinched at the waist and to add a modern touch she paired it with skinny black pants.

Winners: it was between Anna, Johnny and Daniella for the top. I have to admit I was surprised to see Anna in that list because the jacket ruined the overall look. If I had to choose a third I'd go with James Paul. In the end Johnny won so I guess his fire for winning returned.

Losers: it was between Haven and Reco and the reason behind why they were at the bottom couldn't have been further apart. Reco's design was way off, looking cartoonish rather than minimalist because he's never seen anything Halston designed other than the photo given for the challenge. Haven had the exact opposite problem, she knew exactly what YSL designed but had horrible execution. Kelly wanted to keep both but Haven was kicked off so now were down to six.

Want to copy a look?

I know Anna's dress was meant to be a younger version of a Chanel drop waist dress, but here is a younger version of Anna's dress. I actually really liked it when I saw it in stores but it was a bit too short for me.

Daniella's jacket was fantastic, accentuating the waist with a very dramatic collar. This Vivienne Westwood blazer is a more subdued version of that.

Another look from the top three was Johnny's interpretation of Versace, a dress with leather details and an A-line skirt. This Kova & T dress is simplified but has that edgy yet flirtateous quality to it.

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's Arrivals

There are some great new arrivals this week. Mike & Chris have truly expanded beyond leather and have a really cool mini dress, there's a beautiful dress from Miu Miu and for everyone looking for a not so ordinary T-shirt Kimberly Taylor has the answer for you.

As soon as I saw this Miu Miu dress I knew I had to include it. I love everything tiered and pleated and since this dress is made from jersey material it's also super comfy.

I'm usually not a fan of neon. It's like an annoying friend, popping up everywhere always loud and obnoxious. Yet just like that friend, sometimes a sprinkling of neon will add the energy and fun that you so desperately need. And so with that, here's a silk Kimberly Taylor T-shirt with neon pink cuffs.

Mike & Chris made a name for itself with fantastic leather jackets but it's done a great job at branching out into new territories. Here's one such venture, a jersey mini dress that is perfect for that night out when you don't want it to seem like you're trying too hard but you still want to be the best dressed in the room.

The Fashion Show Recap: Episode 7

I can't believe it's already the seventh episode of the Fashion Show. I feel like it's just started. Lets get to the recap.

I watch Ugly Betty so I was very excited that Becki Newton was the guest judge for the mini challenge. Her job was to rate how well the designers could turn a clubbing outfit into one fit for work. Each pair of designers was assigned a girl to makeover and they could use anything the girls were wearing plus a lost and found box. Merlin and Johnny's draped top won, Becki said she could see herself wearing it to work.

For the Elimination Challenge the designers new boss was Isaac Mizrahi himself. Their mission was to create a complete look for Isaac's next collection. The designers had to stay in pairs and to get a glimpse of what Isaac Mizrahi was inspired by they got to see the mood board with lots of scraps, drawings, and other bits and pieces. Johnny and Merlin as the winners of the mini challenge got some extra help and actually see Mizrahi's collection and ask him questions.

I thought it was interesting how each pair of designers was inspired by different elements of the mood board, whether it was fish details that James Paul and Lidia liked or the African patterns that Daniella and Reco picked up on. The results were predictable, those designers who really fed off of each other and complimented each other created great looks, the rest suffered.

Daniella and Reco were not happy to continue working together and it showed. They compromised and as a result created a really unflattering ensemble of flower print pants, a purple shirt, and an orangish red cropped jacket. It was bright fashion for an older clientele.
Anna and Haven looked like they molded into one person, agreeing on everything. Haven made awesome culottes and Anna designed a great black jacket. It was my favorite look of the night.
Lidia and James Paul inspired by fish details created a scaly ensemble complete with gold sequins on an unflattering dress and a jacket that only made sense in theory.
Merlin and Johnny with the advantage of having spoken to Isaac made a colorful outfit complete with a plaid tulip skirt, a blouse and a felt jacket that looked a little too dramatic for my taste but mostly everyone liked.

Winners: It was between Merlin and Johnny and Anna and Haven for the wining look. Both executed well, and it seemed like everyone was admiring Johnny and Merlin's outfit, but not felt as a material for the jacket. It was probably the felt that did them in because Anna and Haven won!

Losers: It was between Daniella and Reco and James Paul and Lidia. Daniella and Reco were arguing the whole way through and their outfit left much to be desired but I wasn't expecting either to get kicked off, they are the strongest designers of the group. Between James Paul and Lidia it seemed like James Paul had vision, so Lidia was sent packing.

If you liked the top looks here are some options.

Here are a few pairs of shorts, Haven's favorite article of clothing :)

I could easily see how this Walter skirt could become a summer favorite, and I love the shape of this tulip skirt at Urban Outfitters.

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's Arrivals

First off, don't forget to enter the awesome giveaway in the post below!!!

It's the middle of June and I'm walking around New York in a leather jacket. I guess I should be happy because it was one of the few days it did not rain, and I got to go see the High Line which is beautiful. As we wait for the real summer to set in, here are some new arrivals fitting my summer dreams and autumn reality.

One of my favorite outfits this year has been my latex black pants with a t-shirt and leather jacket. I'm looking for ways to mix this up and these David Lerner ripped leggings are perfect for that. I wasn't a fan of the ripped up stockings trend but these rips don't look like they resulted from a lawn mower accident :)

Speaking of leather jackets here's an awesome one from Yigal Azrouel. It's not your classic motorcycle jacket with an asymmetrical zipper, an interesting collar.

Sometimes I like something so impractical yet I can't help it. I'm not sure where I would wear this dress. It's not quite casual enough for a cafe outing yet not dressy enough for black tie. But as I said I can't help it, I really love this dress.

And now after all that black and grey here's a truly fun dress to wear. There are so many colors, and the whimsical shape...this is what the summer should be.

Giveaway! Giveaway! Giveaway! Giveaway! + Celeb closet!

I'm soo excited for this. A few items this week that celebs are wearing but most importantly you can own one of them for gratis! Yes, that's right I have a GIVEAWAY!

I've been a fan of Love Quotes scarves for the longest while. As you can see Rachel Bilson is as well :) They are so soft, in beautiful summer colors, complimenting all outfits. And if you're in New York you know that its definitely cold enough to warrant a scarf. The good news is that one lucky reader can win a Love Quotes scarf thanks to Chickdowntown.com! Just write in the comments why you LOVE Love Quotes (don't forget an email address if you don't have a blogger account so that I can contact you, or send an email to fashionmatchmaker@gmail.com). I'll get it started. I love Love Quotes because part of the proceeds go to charity, but since this is a giveaway I've donated to St. Judes Hospital on behalf of whoever gets to win this gorgeous scarf :)

The giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and it will end June 23, 2009 at 11:59am (Eastern time). I will announce the winner chosen at random that same evening!

Love Quotes scarf in Blue Pearl free for one lucky winner!

Someone else who supports St. Judes is Jennifer Aniston. Not only does she have perfect hair and an amazing body, but I've always liked her denim choices. Somehow she always picks the perfect pair of jeans, Hudson Jeans being one of her faves, usually with a belt and classic shirt.

I don't know about you but I'm a big Twilight fan. I've read all the books, watched the movie and though I'd much rather be in Bella's shoes I'll have to settle for buying her sweaters :) Here's a BB Dakota hoodie that Kristen Stewart wore in the movie.

The Fashion Show Recap: Episode 6

It's another Fashion Show recap coming your way and this time the designers are interpreting cliques. Were you preppy? a goth? a jock? a nerd? Both challenges involved interpreting these groups.

It all started with the mini challenge where each designer had to create a T-shirt to convince a particular clique to vote in the student body election for Gulianna, a typical High School student. Most had an idea of where to go with their T-shirts, but Angel was struggling, creating a shirt with music notes for a B-girl. Some shirts had cute slogans like Haven's skater shirt that said "Get on board with Gulianna", but the winner was Danielle to everyone's chagrin. She created a shirt for the "green" crew that had a tree applique on it with lots of green leaves.

Since all elimination challenges are related to the mini challenge it came as no surprise that the designers task this week was to look forward and create outfits for women in their 20's inspired by the cliques they were part of in High School. The results?

Reco got Drama, so his interpretation was an empire dress with an asymmetrical hemline paired with plaid vest, it was modern Juliette
Johnny got Jock, and his creation was a really boring top, some tights with fringe on the back, and shorts on top...I really don't see how he thought this could look good to anyone.
Lidia got Nerd and her outfit was a denim overall dress with a white crisp shirt underneath, the only thing that screamed nerd was the giant glasses taped in the middle.
Angel got B-girl and not knowing what that was designed a pair of black wool pants with a bright blue puffy vest. It didn't help that the model was styled with cornrows and clown makeup.
Daniella created an ill fitting outfit from drab fabrics for her environmentalist. I'm sure all environmentalists would love to hear she thinks they all have dirty clothes and dirty hair. I don't know why caring for the environment equals poor hygiene.
Merlin got Mean Girls which was never a clique in my high school but his interpretation of that was a pair of super tight denim jeans and a pink sweater with big cuffs.
Anna got Goth and for her girl she made a pair of skinny black cropped pants and a pink top with an interesting neckline.
James-Paul was preppy and his interpretation was a yellow sweater with khaki shorts and black tights underneath.
Haven got skater and she made a great black hoodie and cropped loose black denim pants. This was my favorite, and unlike the other looks I could actually picture someone wearing this on the street.

Generally I was disappointed because it seemed the designers were pretty literal in their interpretations and it would have been more interesting if they really pictured how a person could evolve and still keep some of those style elements from their high school days.

Winner: It was between Merlin and Haven for the top, with Merlin winning out. I was rooting for Haven, though I gotta admit the jeans Merlin made fit the model perfectly.

Loser: It was between Johnny and Angel and while the judges were deciding there was plenty of drama. It became clear that Johnny is not interested in staying in the competition, he has an investor but what he fails to understand is that if he doesn't sell the investor will stop supporting him. Even if he doesn't care if he wins he needs the exposure. Unfortunately the judges did not just dislike but felt insulted by Angel's design and so it was Angel that got the boot.

The only question left is...which clique were you a part of in High School? :)

If you want to dress like Haven's skater chick here's an option.

I also loved the neckline of Anna's goth outfit and here's a similar shaped top.

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's Arrivals

I'm so excited about this week's new arrivals, and the main reason for that is the contrast of the pieces.  Some I've coveted for a while, I'm talking to you Missoni swimsuit, others I was drawn to by instinct...love the Penkov dress.

I'm a sucker for a nice blouse.  Maybe it's because I watched too many movies where actresses dressed in classics pieces, high waisted skirts and tops, looking sophisticated, elegant and showing everyone they are a force to be reckoned with.  This Joie blouse would look perfect with a simple pencil skirt, but can be worn with jeans for a more casual look.

This is one of those unique dresses that's sure to get a second glance.  Maybe because the dress itself is a contradiction.  It has that Lower East Side vibe, light and carefree, yet it's a structured dress with a class silhouette.

There are some designers whose patterns are so timeless buying their pieces can almost be rationalized as an investment.  Missoni patterns definitely fall into this category.  As we search for more budget friendly ways to add a bit of luxury to our wardrobe, this swimsuit is a great option.

Anthropologie has so much amazing jewelry this summer it's hard to keep up but I immediately noticed this cuff.  Anthropologie calls it a spiderweb cuff and it truly looks like the stone, suspended in midair, has been caught in a golden web.

The Fashion Show Recap: Episode 5

Here is your Fashion Show recap for Episode 5, all about fashion for real women.

It all started with a mini challenge that tested the designers memory skills. While Isaac went on and on about a dress he designed hanging on a mannequin the task was to sketch from memory Kelly's dress. As soon as the designers heard it was Kelly's dress they would be sketching they went into panic mode, but some of the results were pretty on target and Daniella won the challenge. What's really interesting however was the prize, as the winner she could put any one of her fellow designers into the bottom three.

Having completed one challenge with a curve ball it was time for the elimination challenge. Walking into NY model management I'm sure none of the designers expected what came next. They were here to meet their new models, real women, with real bodies. The challenge: to highlight the positive and hide the negative features of their models. Watching the reactions of the designers as the models were assigned to them was almost offensive. Their flaws: being petite, a heavier bottom, a large or small bust, and so on. Basically these are women like you and me, real potential customers. Instead of embracing how to make these women feel better about themselves all I heard were complaints about padding mannequins and having models that are "large all over". My opinion is, if your designs only flatter hangers then you are not a good designer. With all the complaints it was interesting to see the resulting creations during the Fashion Show.

Keith whose model wanted a dress that would create some curves for her got a red satin prom dress with a black panel around the waist.

Johnny's model was very curvy and to accentuate that he made a black dress with an hourglass flower panel built in. The short length and the neon colors made this seem pretty cheap.

Anna created a dress with a pencil skirt that would be perfect for work if only the fit was better.

Daniella who complained the most made a great black dress and jacket that created curves for her model. The overall look was very modern and sophisticated, it was like the woman underwent a makeover.

Haven created a hot pink dress with some black and white zigzag details and a collar. It fit well but the collar and zigzags seemed out of place.

James-Paul had a model with broad shoulders, so he made a boring white blouse and black skirt to take attention away from them.

Lidia created a violet cocktail dress with pink silk panels that was quite pretty.

Merlin's look was a disaster. His model wanted to hide her big bust so naturally he created a jacket that did the exact opposite and the skirt was so tight the model could hardly walk.

Angel had to redo her dress last minute and it showed because she created a slinky dress that accentuated the fact that the model had no curves and there were still pins in the dress while the model was walking down the runway.

Reco who was the only one not worried about the challenge created a gray pencil skirt and vest that was complimented by a red blouse with ruffle detail. Everyone loved this look but I actually thought it looked cheap.

Winner: the two best looks from the Fashion Show as voted by the audience was Reco's and Daniella's. After much praise for both looks Daniella's was picked as the winner which I was very happy about because she really made her model look fantastic.

Loser: the three worst looks were Angel's (as voted in by Daniella), Merlin's and Keith's. Merlin's vision saved him and between Angel and Keith it was clear that Keith, with a completely uninspired dress, would be kicked off.

As a general note looks like front runners are emerging on the show. Reco and Daniella have been in the top on multiple occasions and it does seem like they have the most skill. It will be interesting if they make it all the way to the end.

If you liked Reco's ruffle top here are a couple very pretty options.

Anna's dress was one of my favorites though the execution wasn't as great. Here are a couple similar ones

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's Arrivals

There were lots of new arrivals to sift through this week but only a few really caught my eye. As usual Alexander Wang makes memorable dresses, and there's also a gorgeous Valentino bag, but in an ode to today's weather in New York I'm including an umbrella.

On a slightly different note, have I mentioned how giveaways are so awesome? As it turns out Toy watches is giving away a free watch every Friday this June on their twitter page. If you can answer questions you might win a watch like the one below! Not too long ago I was thinking of buying one, and I don't know what stopped me but I think it was providence because now I'm determined I'll win and have become a follower of toywatch :)

Now on to the new arrivals. Umbrellas are usually so sad and boring in their dark somber colors. Just looking down a street that's a sea of black is depressing. That's why I propose we all get colorful umbrellas like this one. That way there'll be a reason to smile even with the worst torrential downpours outside! And it comes in a little bag.

And under that umbrella you can wear this sexy Alexander Wang dress. It's very similar to a lilac one I posted earlier but I can't help it, I love how this open back just sneaks up on you.

I just read about roses this morning, and naturally I gravitated towards Valentino's Rosette bag. I don't think I have to explain why I love it. It's got the most amazing detail, and is the perfect substitute for carrying a bouquet around everywhere I go :)

MTV Movie Awards Fashion

The MTV awards are always a little fun, a little outrageous and because no one takes them seriously provide a glimpse into a stars personal style. This year was year of Twilight. I couldn't count how many times Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart ended up on stage. The girls just kept on screaming and really nobody else stood a chance. But lets get to the task at hand, the fashion at the awards. Mini dresses were a huge trend, everyone from Ashley Tisdale to Sandra Bullock was trying to show off their toned legs. The only question was whether to go for a fuller skirt which some celebs like Megan Fox and Kristen Bell chose to do.

Simply Stunning

I love that Leighton Meester is taking risks. This dress is not for the faint of heart, half of it is sheer, but she pulls it off, and the makeup is flawless!

Leighton Meester in Emilio de la Morena

Taraji Henson looks amazing in this Roberto Cavalli mini. If I were to pick the perfect dress for this occasion, this dress would be it.

Taraji Henson in Roberto Cavalli

Purple leather. Who knew it could work but Ashley Tisdale is evidence that it's a great way to make a statement. I'm not crazy about the shoes, they detract from rather than compliment the look, but all in all Ashley is definitely a red carpet winner.

Ashley Tisdale in leather Elise Overland dress with Balenciaga belt and Paul & Joe sister shoes

Runners Up

I know Kristen Stewart was supposed to wear heels with this dress but I think the sneakers reflect her personality better and this is the perfect awards show for that.

Kristen Stewart in Yigal Azruel

Usually I shy away from crystals but this green Swarovski crystal dress for Twenty8Twelve looks effortlessly cool on Sienna Miller. My favorite use of color on the red carpet.

Sienna Miller in Twenty8Twelve

I really like the shape of the Matthew Williamson blouse that Cameron Diaz is wearing. The J Brand jeans fit like a glove as well. On the downside I'm not a fan of the print of the top and the booties are too matchy.

Cameron Diaz in a Matthew Williamson shirt, J brand jeans, and Giuseppe Zanotti boots

Sandra Bullock picked a great Abaete dress and she would have been one of my favorites if it wasn't for the black stockings which I admit work with the dress but isn't it time to embrace summer and drop the tights? Couldn't help but keep Ryan Renolds for the eye candy :)

Sandra Bullock in Abaete

It is beyond me how Megan Fox could have walked out the door with that hair. Watching the show I actually thought she might be losing her hair it looked so strange slicked down like that. Which is a shame because the Dolce & Gabanna dress looked amazing.

Megan Fox in Dolce & Gabanna

Perfectly boring

Though I really liked the tiered skirt of this dress it felt a little safe for this type of event.
Kristen Bell

I could easily imagine Lauren Conrad thinking this was a fashion risk. It reminds me of 80's dresses with a lot of ruffles.

Lauren Conrad in Moschino

Miley Cyrus dresses for herself 20 years from now. The nude dress with the pumps would be great to wear for an art gallery opening, not the MTV Movie awards.

Miley Cyrus in Moschino Cheap and Chic

This isn't a terribly flattering dress. It has the amazing quality of being shapeless and asymmetrical all at the same time.

Vanessa Hudgens in Max Azria

Normally I'm a fan of a sexy pants suit, but something is not right in Malin Akerman's interpretation. Maybe it's the severe hair, or maybe the corset beneath the suit.

Malin Akerman in Dolce & Gabanna

When it comes to this dress I feel a bit torn. On the one hand the top looks great and compliments Hayden, but what is going on with the skirt?
