Fashion Review: Golden Globes 2012

It's awards season again and that means it's time for the stars to shine in beautiful couture gowns. We had some risk takers - Charlize Theron, Lea Michelle - but overall it was a pretty sedate night. I hope everyone picks up the ante for Oscar time. Here's who was best, worst, and who fell in the middle.

Best Dressed

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Dianna Agron in Giles was one of the best

dressed of the night. I'm not crazy about the tiered bottom but the bodice is stunning!

I'm crushing on Emma Stone in Lanvin. Her earlier turn in a mossy green made a

greater impact but this is still one of the more interesting looks of the night.

Amber Riley is the best she's ever looked in Badgley Mischka.

Charlize Theron brings drama to the Golden Globes.

This Dior gown is exactly what the awards season is missing.

Middle of the pack

Jessica Alba is beautiful in Gucci, styled by Brad Goreski,

you think Rachel Zoe would have done a better job?

Kate Beckinsale is simply beautiful in this simple for Roberto Cavalli dress

Paula Patton in Monique Lhuillier definitely stood out color wise

Reese Witherspoon is lovely in a red Zac Posen gown

I love not seeing Angelina Jolie in yet another caftan, and the fit of this Versace gown

is great but the color combo isn't working on Angie, I prefer her in brighter hues.

Worst Dressed

I love Kristen Wiig, I just wish she'd start making better fashion choices than

this Bill Blass gown that washes her out. She's gotta go for it like a true leading lady!

Heidi Klum in an unflattering Calvin Klein dress

I hate to do this because she took a risk, but Lea Michelle in Marchesa

makes my worst dressed list. There was way too much going on

between the sheer elements, the embroidery and the shimmering fabric.

Kate Winslet in Jenny Packham looks frumpy, which is disappointing after

The Academy Awards have come and gone and now we can pore over the fashion! The Oscar's brought the usual mix of reds, whites/nudes and dark hues. I wish there was more risk taking but I'll take what I can get, so here we go...

Best Dressed

I am loving the shape, "boob" details (as Kelly Osbourne put it) and color of this Elie Saab dress on Mila Kunis - stunning!!!

The Outrageous

Katy Perry is an angel impersonator in Giorgio Armani

Rihanna leaves little to the imagination in Jean Paul Gaultier

Lady Gaga pushed the boundaries once again emerging from her cocoon in a nude rubbery concoction with exaggerated shoulders. She changed into a black outfit with what looked like butt implants to receive her awards.

Fashion Review: SAG Awards

Awards season is in full swing and today it was the SAG Awards time to shine. Similar to the Golden Globes in style minus some of the star power, it was a great opportunity for some to make up for their Golden Globes mistakes...I'm talking to you Lea Michelle. Here's a rundown of the good, the blah and the ugly.

Best Dressed

Natalie Portman is showing off her baby bump in Azzaro.

Mila Kunis looks like perfection in her Alexander McQueen, particularly the hair and makeup.

Eva Longoria went from structured black to flowy white at the SAG Awards. This Georges Hobeika is stunning, though may work better on someone taller.

Less Best Dressed

What an improvement for Lea Michelle. This is still an Oscar de la Renta but this time she's not swallowed up by fabric.

I adore this J. Mendel gown on Rosario Dawson. I just wish she paired it with a different shoe.

Worst Dressed

Bad hair and poor accessories make this overworked Alberta Ferretti dress that much worse. Which is a shame because Winona Ryder is such a beautiful actress.

I know E! has trained us to love Kim Kardashian in all her incarnations but this beaded Marchesa gown has accents in all the wrong places.

Can the Mad Men wardrobe department help Christina Hendricks? L'Wren Scott has great sheaths but this is not a favorite of mine.

Dianna Agron usually tries to be such an angel so it is nice to see her trying something new and vintage Chanel is always tempting but this simply doesn't work. The top doesn't fit and the length is not flattering.

Fashion Review: Golden Globes 2011

It was an interesting evening at the Golden Globes. Ricky Gervais certainly made sure of it. Fashion wise it was not so exciting I'm sad to say. Certain colors proved more popular - emerald green, ruby red, various shades of nude and everyone's fave black. There were a few standouts, so without further ado, here's the best, the worst, and the in between.

Best Dressed

The girl of the moment Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf. It's hard to find a great dress when you are pregnant but this color compliments Natalie's skin tone and has an interesting element in the flower.

January Jones in continues to wow in Versace, you can always count on her to be different

Gorgeous Olivia Wilde in a sparkly Marchesa gown. I just wish her hair didn't hide her face so much. Must be the bangs.

Eva Longoria in Zac Posen shows off her curves

Somewhere in the middle

Ryan Renold's girls Scarlett Johansson (in Elie Saab) and Sandra Bullock (in Jenny Packham) are pretty in pale peach numbers, was this planned?

Claire Danes in Calvin Klein - love the color!

Angelina Jolie in a brilliant green but awfully conservative Versace

Megan Fox is pretty in Armani but still a yawn

Mila Kunis in Vera Wang. The color is perfect but the dress is a bit overdone. - loved you in Black Swan Mila!!!

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad would be better without the shrug

Worst Dressed

Anne Hathaway in Armani - the mini disks and giant shoulders were from the space age

Julianne Moore in another asymmetrical Lanvin that doesn't quite work

Usually Michelle Williams makes interesting quirky choices but this Valentino is not flattering at all from the color to the side ruffles.

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Romona Keveza - you can fit another person in that top

Tina Fey makes an improvement in L'Wren Scott but why the flutter sleeves?

After watching a very disappointing Project Runway I decided its time to review Spring 2011 Fashion Week in NYC, Milan and Paris. I don't know about you, but I was really rooting for Mondo. So I'll start out with my two favorite looks from each collection and then move on to some other amazing designers.

Project Runway Mondo vs Gretchen

Phillip Lim

Loved the simplicity of this collection.

Christian Dior

John Galliano embraced the sailor look and I was swept away with him.

Lanvin

How can you not love the red dress. It is a standout and I am sure we'll see it on the red carpet.

D&G

I saved my all time favorite for last. I couldn't help but fall in love with this collection. Peasant dresses, beautiful prints, flowy, carefree...I feel like putting on a dress from this collection will transport me to a town on the Italian riviera, sitting in a cafe, eating risotto, watching the sunset.

I've been a recent victim of fashion deja vu. As a shopaholic, I tend to scroll through websites whether I need something or not. In this case I was perusing Victorias Secret to see if I can find a nice swimsuit. Naturally I simply had to click on dresses and this is when the deja vu occurred.

I was pretty in love last year with Chanel's wookie collection as I called it. The sweaterdresses were awesome. I could just imagine myself drowning in soft wool but then I had to wake myself up because Chanel sweaters are not exactly in my budget. Which brings me to todays session on Victorias Secret. I open up the dress section and there is the Chanel dress staring back at me. No, not the real Chanel, but close enough. Just how close? You be the judge :)

Fashion's Night Out Report

The weekend is almost over so it's time to reflect on past events, and the event I choose to reflect on is Fashion's Night Out. Armed with comfortable shoes (how unfashionable I know!), a camera & tons of energy I embarked on what I thought would be a stroll through downtown Manhattan.

As soon as I got to Soho I realized that strolling was simply not an option. The streets were beyond congested. Here's where I actually made it to:

Phillip Lim - very crowded, this was one of the only parties with hard liquor...the clothes were wisely cleared away because where there is free liquor accidents are bound to happen :)

Marni - I came up to Marni because everyone was walking around with balloons from the store and I desperately wanted one. Once I got the balloon I headed inside, eyed some very nice boots, and mixed the gin I had earlier with some nice wine and very tasty dessert.

Ralph Lauren - became window watching central when Jessica Alba came by. After 15 min of standing on my tippy toes trying to see Jessica along with a few hundred other onlookers, I couldn't take it any more and left. That smudge in the picture is Jessica. The quarter of her face that I did get to see looked very pretty ;)

Eileen Fisher - my favorite by far. After sipping some champagne the salespeople let us know we could sign up for DJ lessons. It was so much fun pretending I'm Sam Ronson. I even got a compliment from the "teacher", though I suspect everyone got one :)

I do have one bone I have to pick with this year's Fashion's Night Out. This year more stores opted to have guestlists which in my mind defeats the purpose of this great night. Intermix had a list even though there wasn't anything special happening inside once I "sneaked" in. So I beg if anyone's listening, next year please don't exclude. This is the one night where it doesn't matter who you are, you still have a chance to experience your favorites brands & designers...and if you're really lucky, rub shoulders with D-list celebs ;)

Fashion's Night Out 2010!!!

It's Fashion's Night Out Eve (I'm coining the term :) and my head is spinning from all the places I want to go to. Unfortunately I can't be in two places at the same time so it's time to make some very tough decisions. This time around I'm going to stick around downtown.

Here are the events on my radar:

There are three block parties this year! One on Bowery& Bond, another on Bleeker between Perry and West 4th, and finally the Mercer street block party. All offer up DIY, delicious food, discounts and more.

I'm intrigued by the French flea market at Opening Ceremony around 29th st and Broadway. I love flea markets but a flea market with designs by Alexander Wang & Rodarte??? That's just out of this world!

Shops in Meatpacking are also teaming up, there's a Scavenger Hunt with the opportunity to win a $5000 gift card.

After watching Janelle Monae on So You Think You Can Dance I became an instant fan and she'll be at the Ralph Lauren store on West Broadway.

Special shoutout to Stella McCartney for supporting the Chernobyl Children's Project. As a Chernobyl child myself it feels wonderful that someone is still shining a light on a catastrophe whose effects are still felt today.

Hunt for Jessica Alba's Shoes

It all began on August 4, when Jessica Alba came out of a hair salon wearing what I thought were the most adorable shoes that ever walked the earth. They had me at hello.

I became obsessed much like Rachel Zoe becomes obsessed with potential awards show dresses, which if you have seen the Rachel Zoe Project, happens every episode, and leaves Brad flustered and scurrying. Sadly I don't have a loyal assistant by my side, so I set out on this mission alone.

My first course of action was to search every website for the shoes. Google, Shopstyle, you name it, I was on there, looking for "berry shoes", "cherry shoes", and everything in between. This yielded nothing so I went back to the source, and searched for "Jessica Alba hair salon". Here I found a clue, a comment below a picture that said "These are Corso Como Djulia sandals".

Needless to say searching for Corso Como Djulia led me to a dead end. I was confused, were these shoes sold out? We're they not available yet? What is a shoe-a-holic to do? The answer was clear, I emailed Corso Como and waited impatiently for an answer. A few days later my next clue came: the shoes had been sold to Anthropologie. Hot on the trail I searched the Anthropologie site to no avail. The phantom shoes were no where to be found. Where did Jessica Alba find them?!

Not taking no for an answer I emailed Anthropologie. As it turns out Anthropologie had named them Trifle Berry Flats, they had been sold months before, and the only two stores still had them in my size (8.5) : Chevy Chase, MD and Birmingham, AL. Finally victory was close at hand. After much confusion from the sales girl at the Chevy Chase store, who said she's never heard of the sandals, I was able to get them shipped to NYC. The hunt was over, as of today I am a proud owner of Corso Como Djulia/Trifle Berry Flats!!! Can't wait to wear them :)

Emmy Fashion Review

Short ode to Emmy fashion. It was not a terribly exciting year but there are a few exceptions that I would like to highlight :)

First up is Keri Russell in Vintage Scherrer. The color is amazing, and though some deemed it inappropriate (ahem E!), I prefer this to dated, reserved styles any day.

Another controversial one was January Jones' Versace number. I adored it, it was another bold color and the shape was quite interesting.

Claire Danes was stunning. When I look at her I can't believe it's the same girl from "My So Called Life".

One of my least favorites was Sofia Vergara. Such a beautiful woman, she definitely doesn't need such a busy dress to accentuate her assets. And what's the fabric sticking out of the bodice?

Another busy dress was Tina Fey's Oscar de la Renta. Tina Fey has an amazing knack for picking unflattering dresses, a skill I hope she loses.

Finally, I'm very upset about Christina Hendricks. Every time she hits the red carpet she manages to downplay her natural beauty. Only Mad Men stylists seem to know how to dress her.

Look I Want to Steal: Sex and the City

Being the huge Sex and the City fan that I am, as expected I ran out the see the movie as soon as I could :) It's a lot of fun, and the fashion was fantastic. Keep a look out for all the fabulous Halston Heritage dresses! But the look I want to steal is Carrie's pleated skirts with a long t-shirt over. It was stylish, cool and very Carrie!

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from this Week's New Arrivals

Hmm not sure if I should say this post is late or early but either way I'm excited about it! Why? Because it has so many things I covet. I'm not in the market for a white summer bag but as soon as I saw the Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, I immediately started thinking of reasons of why I must have it ;)

Anthropologie has so many great tops these days! This one is going on my list of must haves. It has wonderful ruffle details to dress up a pair of jeans, and can be worn with a high waisted skirt for a feminine work outfit.

I've been searching for a nice pair of linen pants for a while now. Linen is light and casual and so perfect for breezy summer evenings, or air conditioned movie theaters :) If you want to go all the way with the nautical look, pair with a fitted striped top!

I saw this bag in the Marc by Marc Jacobs store, wandering around the West Village (my fave neighborhood in NYC). Love the shape. It's big so you can fit your whole life in there, but what really gets me is the unique quilted design. Kind of reminds me of a soccer ball :)

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's New Arrivals

First off, for all those celebrating Passover or Easter, Happy Holidays!!! Now that I have that off my chest, it's time for new arrivals :) One is not in my budget...and that's an understatement...but I loved this jacket when I saw it on the runways so I couldn't not include it.'

Alexander Wang had a football inspired collection and though intuitively that doesn't lend itself to dress, that's exactly what Alexander Wang did. It has some interesting elements, the bandage and built in sweater. It's a dress that is just quirky enough to turn heads.

To keep with the edgy theme here's a bag by Rebecca Minkoff. It's a clutch with hardware: studs and zippers. What's really awesome is that it comes with a removable strap and so can be worn in multiple ways. Now that I think about it, this is exactly what I've been looking for ;)

I really loved Donna Karan's collection with all the ruffle detail. It's elegant, feminine, and if I had an extra few thousand dollars lying around I would totally love to rock this jacket. It'll look fantastic worn with a skirt like on the runway or with jeans.

Fashion Matches: Best Finds From This Week's New Arrivals!

Finally there are some new arrivals I got really really excited about! I hope there are Disney fans out there like me :)

I'm the type of person that likes to save the best for last, but I'm literally giddy about this skirt so I'm putting it up front. It's a D&G Mickey Mouse skirt! Just this past weekend my fiancee was looking through a magazine and pointed to this look as one he would like me to emulate :) Coincidentally it was one of my favorites from the Spring 2010 collections during Milan's Fashion Week.

The Sherlock Holmes era style is clearly making a come back. First there was the All Saints bustle coat. Now there's a Juicy Couture bustle skirt.

Speaking of All Saints here's a fantastic dress. It's very on trend, plaid, asymmetrical, one shoulder. Yet with all that, it doesn't seem overwhelming. If you're looking for an edgier cocktail dress this is perfect.

It's getting warmer but for those breezy summer nights it's nice to have a stylish jacket. I love the way the collar lies. It has a very cool vibe.

Fashion Week: Best of New York, Milan and Paris!

Fashion week or more accurately fashion weeks are over and I can finally sit down, relax and evaluate what designers had to offer. Some of the more obvious things have already been reported on: the continuation of the leggings trend, the return of the suit. It's all about wearable fashion, which is why I have two questions: first, why the wookie trend? Particularly Chanel and D&G collections were all about the fur. And what's even more unexpected...why did both Victoria Beckham and Donatella Versace decide that this is the season to return to John Lennon sunglasses? Adding a wacky accessory does not make a cohesive collection. That said Victoria Beckham's collection was actually one of my favorites. Now on to the main events...

New York

Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham seems to have picked up where Roland Mouret has left off. Structured dresses that compliment a woman's figure and make great outfits for the office and transition to night. I imagine this collection will sell very well when it hits stores.

Marchesa
The romantic details in these dresses speak for themselves. The only worry, with so much going on these dresses can overwhelm someone other than a leggy model.

Milan

Emporio Armani
I have mixed feelings about this collection from Armani. On the one hand there were the younger styles like the plaid tulip skirt below. On the other there were plenty of pants with pleats that I thought went out with the 80s.

Paris

Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen's collection was another sad reminder what a huge loss the fashion world suffered in losing this tremendously talented designer. The exaggerated kimono paired with over the knee boots is particularly fantastic.

Christian Dior
J'adore this collection. The top hats, leather jackets, plaid, ruffle, over the knee boots, everything is perfect. The mix of soft and tough fabrics give and unexpected edge to otherwise romantic, feminine dresses. Now if only I could win the lottery and get every look from this collection ;)

Chanel
I nominate this to be called "the Wookie" collection. Never have I said, I wish I was covered in fur head to toe. However, if that is your wish, Chanel is the brand for you! That said, a lot of the collection was beautiful and wearable. I could live in the sweater dresses all winter long :)

Miu Miu
When it comes to wearable clothes, Miu Miu's collection was a real standout for me. The coats were a favorite and I really loved the super skinny pants and tunic below. Miuccia Prada has a way of taking simple designs and making them look polished, sophisticated yet modern at the same time.

Loving the new arrivals this week! My fiancé was particularly fond of the Elizabeth and James kimono dress. On the other side of the spectrum, the bubble dress when accessorized right looks cute as a button :)

First, the kimono dress. I can't gush about it more. It's that perfect shape, loose on top, tight at the bottom, neckline that is revealing just the right amount, overall effect: sexy but not overdone. Then there's the color, a pretty shade of pink. And on top of that the zipper detail gives it a bit of an edge.

A good blouse goes a long way. It's an item that can be worn to work or out. I like the puffy sleeves of this blouse. Tucked into a high waisted skirt it'll create a sweet spring look.

This is an interesting jacket. It's military inspired, but unlike the usual nepoleonic garb that was seen all over the runways, this one has a hard edge thanks to the leather. The color is great because it too is unexpected, a blue rather than the usual olive.

Bubble dresses are inherently adorable. This one is awesome because it's so extreme. Without a belt it's a shapeless sack. As soon as you belt it though, it transforms into a cute dress that accentuates your waist line.

So I must admit I've been staring at dresses for this past week but when it came time to pick what I was most excited about I couldn't leave out these awesome accessories. I'm in love with the Isabel Marant ring and Valentino bags are a weakness of mine ;)

But first up, I adore this Beyond Vintage dress mostly because it has that sexy, loose, seventies vibe. It's a great print, slimming and can be paired with bright jewelry to liven it up.

I don't know what compelled me this morning, but I woke up with the urgent desire to look at watches. I haven't really needed one recently, relying on my cell phone to tell time and do pretty much everything else, but a watch is also a fashion statement, so with that thought in mind I started exploring.

The transition from vacation to real world is almost complete! I'm finally on NYC time. The mendhi I got is not off yet but it's fading steadily. And it's Thursday, so here are some new arrivals :)

I really like the shape of this jumpsuit. It shows just enough skin to be sexy, but the volume makes it a comfortable alternative to that dress you suck in your stomach for ;).

So I know I've been away, but I have a very good reason. I was in India!!! It was an awesome vacation and I'll post up some pics later this week. However, lets get to the clothes :) I'm still in love with All Saints, and Marc Jacobs has an adorable dress for spring as usual. For easy style there's also a striped dress and a very cute tank.

There's nothing simpler than putting on this striped dress by Eight Sixty for day or dressed up for night with some jewelry and a blazer. It's super sexy, and though I see myself wearing it with flats it'd look fantastic with heels as well.

I'm a sucker for flower petals on shirts, and this is a great example of one. Unlike others I've seen this one is casual, perfect for a weekend with a pair of jeans.

I have a Marc by Marc Jacobs dress that I've been wearing for years and it always makes me feel girly and pretty, and this one has the potential of being the same. It comes in an vanilla color as well, but I like the statement making red. The shape is flattering on all figures.

Awesome Brand Alert: AllSaints!

Ever since I saw a photo of Halle Berry cool and casual in a great sweater dress, I vowed to find out where she found it. Turns out she got it at AllSaints, a British brand that is making it's way stateside. So far there's a store in LA, and on my recent trip to Miami I discovered there's a store on Lincoln Road. As soon as I walked into the store I knew it was meant to be. Great sweater dresses were just the beginning, I fell in love with almost all their dresses and a coat that had a bustle!

Luckily I went into AllSaints first day of my trip in freezing Miami, I was wearing this sweater the rest of the trip.

Happy New Year's Everyone!!!!!!!!!! In Russia we exchange presents on New Years so this is officially the most exciting night. Here are some presents I wouldn't mind getting :)

I went on a little D&G streak a while ago. I love their prints, the flowers are so girly and refreshing. My favorite was the collection a while back with painted scenes reminiscent of impressionist art. Here's a beautiful flower print dress.

I don't know how this happened but today's new arrivals came out as an outfit. I'll be in Miami in a couple of weeks and this kind of look is exactly what I want to be wearing right about now, rather than my snow boots :)

This dress is a perfect summer dress. It is light, airy and fun to accessorize. I love the crochet details.

It's freezing cold here in NYC and I want nothing more than to drift away to a place that's bright and sunny. Alas, this is not my fate so here are some clothes that are bright and sunny.

I haven't done a celeb closet in a while. That said here are a few cute items that J.Lo, L.C. and Tay.Swift wore (ok, I made that last one up because it wasn't going with the flow ;)

First up, a Rebecca Taylor party dress that Taylor Swift wore. I love Taylor more and more each time I see her. She's beautiful but also seems like a genuinely sweet, good person, and her clothes perfectly compliment that image.

I keep on telling myself it's winter because I look outside in NYC and it's 60 degrees out and it's hard to think of sweaters, coats, and boots. That being said, here is a sweater, boots, and since it's still warm - a dress!

Not all of us can afford Alexander Wang so it's good to see a similar sweater for a fraction of the price. This sweater is from Urban Outfitters. It'll go fantastic with tights and boots like the ones below ;). It kind of reminds me of something I'd see on the Matrix, maybe post fight...

So speaking of the boots, here are slouchy suede wedges that will look fantastic with just about anything. Wedges are more dressy than flats, but more comfortable than heels, so its a perfect medium.

I recently bought a pair of Guess boots that I've since worn practically every day. How does this relate to the post? Well, in honor of that, I've decided this week to revisit Guess, Bebe and Armani Exchange to see what they have to offer and I'm quite happy with the results :) The best part, all three are under $100!

First up, a very cute dress from Guess. It's silk and I can just see from the picture how wonderfully it would feel on. A perfect dress to show off your legs!

Something else that will show off those legs, this fleece skirt from Armani Exchange. I admit it's not terribly practical, though I can see myself playing tennis in it. I like the gathering and the white band at the bottom adds a nice touch.

These boots from Bebe are actually an old favorite. A year or two ago Bebe had a catalog with these boots worn by Eva Longoria. The only thing that stopped me from buying them is fear that I would fall over wearing them in the snow. But now that I see these pom poms, it's like I'm in love all over again :)

Project Runway Recap: Season Finale

We all know the results already, but let me take you through a recap anyway because it's fun :) I can't believe how long ago this was filmed. It was great to finally see the collections that Irina, Althea and Carol Hannah put together.

Althea's collection came first. It was a great sportswear collection. Lots of separates, jackets, more of those voluminous pants we've seen all season long. What I didn't understand is her inspiration: what people in the future might wear today? The garments looked contemporary but definitely not futuristic. My two favorite looks were a long sweater and the green dress paired with a leather jacket.

Carol Hannah was up next. Jewel toned silks dominated the collection. There were many pretty dresses both of the short and long variety. Carol Hannah was very proud she made pants, though to be honest I would have rather her stuck to what she does best. Though I really liked the idea of a lilac dress with a tight fitting top and tulle skirt, my fave two looks were a short draped number and the bright blue 13th look she made while sick!

Irina's was the last collection. It was very New York, dark, modern, with chunky knits, leggings, and I loved the coats. It was a cohesive collection. The only thing I was not crazy about were the hats. They gave the looks edge but were a bit on the costumy side. The standout piece for me was the black pleated skirt and top, and the gray coat.

WINNER: The final decision had to be made. Though Carol Hannah made a great effort it was between Althea and Irina for the top spot. Irina's vision made her a winner so

Red Carpet: AMA Fashion 2009

The AMA' s left much to be desired fashion wise. It seemed like a lot of black and beige, but that wasn't the worst problem. What bothered me most was how ill fitting most of the dresses were. Luckily Rihanna was there to save the day. Here's the breakdown!

Simply Stunning

Rihanna is gorgeous in her Marchesa gown. It looks a bit avant-garde which suits Rihanna perfectly. I love the origami inspired shape. This was one my favorites from Marchesa's Spring 2010 collection so I'm very glad someone is wearing it :)

In the Middle

Shakira looked cute in her yellow Versace concoction and her hair and makeup was great, but something wasn't working for me. Maybe it was the black shoes, maybe because it was too much like the Balmain dress she wore to the MTV awards.

Carry Underwood usually glams it up, and maybe that was the original idea for this gold lame grecian mini by Theia, but it wasn't working. It didn't fit right, the draping was not flattering.

I like the idea of Kate Hudson's Versace dress, but there is definitely a problem of fit and proportions. The straps are way too long, making this dress prone to flashing. As a result the waist seems too high in comparison to where the neckline is. I can see how this would look fantastic on a super tall model.

I'm not quite sure about Nicole Kidman's Balenciaga gown. It's interesting, but not flattering. It's a bit too pale and hides her body. I long for the Nicole of old, remember the green Prada or the gold goddess Christian Dior?

All Wrong

I have a feeling people are going to hate me for this but I never liked Vivienne Westwood's wedding dress in Sex and the City. The exaggerated triangular neckline is not flattering. It may work on the runway but not on real people. And that's only half the problem with Leona Lewis' dress, the bottom looks like a disaster too, a strange 80's mini.

Kelly Clarkson, why oh why did you choose this dress??? It is consumed by sparkles, shapeless, and it is not helped by the sheer tights. Simply raising the hemline just a bit and wearing opaque tights would have helped.

It's a mixed bag of treats this week. A couple of dresses that play on volume, an interesting shaped bag and recognition of the hotest trend at the moment: the thigh high boot.

I like dresses that leave something to the imagination and here's the first dress of the kind, a mini from Parker. I like the general shape of this dress. Loose like a tunic it has a great flowing quality to it. Careful with the length of this dress, if it's too long it can look a bit dowdy, so don't be afraid to shorten it.

And here's a pair of boots that will go great with the Parker mini. The thigh high boot trend is all over the place. Kate Hudson seems to live in hers. It's a great way to add some spice to an outfit. You can pair them with jeans like Kate and Penelope do, but if you're pairinig with a dress, make sure it's not too tight. The goal here is not to look like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman pre-makeover.

This Alexander Wang dress is quite a departure from the sleek, sophisticated garments that are so beloved by young Hollywood. What it retains however is the modern, urban feel that all Alexander Wang clothes have in common.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 13

Last night we got to see what collections Althea, Carol Hannah and Irina were working on for Fashion Week. There was lots to see and lots for Tim to comment on. We also got to see the hectic days leading up to the runway, and it wouldn't be Project Runway without an extra surprise!

Carol Hannah was the first one Tim visited and he seemed impressed. The collection definitely focused on evening wear. There were lots of silk fabrics in different jewel tones. There was one purple gown that I really loved.

Irina came next. Her collection was very New York, and by that I don't mean the Coney Island pictures on her t-shirts, but the black and gray that was 99% of her collection. She tried to incorporate knits and coats. Speaking of the Coney Island pics, she couldn't use them because it wasn't "her" design according to the show producers.

Althea was the last one Tim visited. Interestingly enough she also focused on knits, and Tim encouraged it as well. I really liked the hot pink dress that was in the background of some of the shots.

As usual there was lots to do in NYC. It never ceases to amaze me how year after year the designers come to New York with unfinished garments after all the weeks they have to make them. Wouldn't you want all that time to make sure everything fits on the models? Apparently not because Irina had a dress sprawled on the floor. I felt really bad for Carol Hannah because on top of this being the most important and most stressful week, she was also sick!

It was at this point that Heidi and Tim came in for the surprise. In seasons past designers were asked to create one last look for their collection. I thought they were done with that, but unfortunately for the designers I was wrong. On the positive side they get help from the last three designers that were booted off.

Can't wait for next week to see the 13th design, and Carol Hannha, Althea and Irina's collections!

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's New Arrivals

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was disappointed by this week's new arrivals. There was nothing truly great to grab my attention, nothing to fall in love with :(. Catherine Malandrino provided the only exception.

There's no denying this dress is very 80's. It's tight, short, vibrant. It's a strong look that begs for attention. It's almost sold out, but I'm posting it anyway because I hope it'll be reordered, and then I can get my hands on it!

I would pair the dress with silver accessories. This J.Crew clutch is a great start. There is a wonderful natural quality to the way the stones are randomly placed. Not only does this clutch work perfectly with chic looks like the one above, it'll also add some glamor to a simple jeans and T-shirt outfit.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 12

So...after many grueling weeks we're finally down to the last Project Runway challenge! Who's dreams will be sadly disappointed? You'll have to wait till the end of the post ;)

The challenge this week was actually my favorite from a previous season, the Art of Fashion challenge, where designers had to create a piece inspired by something in a museum. The one in question this time around was the Getty Museum and there was so much to be inspired by. Carol Hannah loved a four poster bed with luxurious brocade fabric. Her gold gown was impeccably made, and the draping was reminiscent of the bed, though the judges didn't see a direct connection. Christopher fell in love with a fountain on the grounds of the museum. He tried to recreate the shades of gray and green moss in a gown with a beautiful neckline. His downfall was the stiff skirt. Irina tried to recreate the opulence in a painting of a woman dressed in a sheer garment, surrounded by fur. I wasn't crazy about the look she created, it was an interesting, knee length, semi sheer dress, with an open back. The fur didn't fit so she dropped it, but in trying to style the look in a "tough" way, it took away from the airy feeling of the dress. Althea bit off more than she could chew trying to recreate the architectural elements of the building in her golden skirt. The sheer top seemed almost like an afterthought and the skirt wasn't well made. Gordana went straight for Impressionist art, picking a painting by Monet of the Rouen cathedral. The color, texture, shape of the gown were all gorgeous. It felt like an angel was floating down the runway. The judges complained about the back and that it did not really wow them, however it was the closest representation of the inspiration that they had seen.

Winners and Losers: There were no real winners and losers this week. The judges had both positive and negative things to say about each and every look. In the end they decided that Christopher simply wasn't ready for Fashion Week and needed more time to develop as a designer. I would have been curious to see what he would have created. Gordana was next to get cut, and so the top three designers going to fashion week are:

Althea, Carol Hannah, and Irina! Congrats girls!

There are no gowns similar to Gordana's but, these are close in spirit: ethereal and light.

Wedding: Bridal Gown Bliss

I don't think I've mentioned this on my blog before, but I'm engaged! And today was my first official wedding planning experience. In fact it's the one I think I will enjoy the most: finding that perfect wedding dress.

During my lunch hour I decided to pop into Saks, thinking I could skim through some bridal gowns just to get a feel for the materials and textures that are out there. I was also curious if they had a Reem Acra gown I fell in love with online. Gorgeous right?

When I walked into the Bridal Salon however I was quickly told that there are no dresses to look through and I would have to make an appointment. Here are a few other things I found out during my five minute conversation:

- a dress is a "her" not an "it"
- if you're looking for a particular dress, make sure to know "her" name

This week, a study in contrasts. Dresses, a hat and shoes, each with a different feel and personality. I have to say I'm a sucker for pom-poms, it must be the 5 yr old in me, so I loved Diane von Furstenberg's beanie.

Love the color and shape of this Marc by Marc Jacobs dress. It's incredibly flattering, great for all skin tones.

I keep on seeing beanie hats everywhere, Katie Holmes doesn't seem to leave home without it, and here's one with a twist, or rather a pom-pom. Diane von Furstenberg's collection has a bohemian vibe but this adds an element of fun that I really enjoy.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 11

It's always interesting to see things come full circle and that's what this episode of Project Runway is all about. The designers were asked to create a complimentary outfit to one that they have already made in the past.

Irina got to add to her wintery Aspen look, she created a brocade mini dress and an oversize sweater. Gordana wanted to make something elegant yet with an edge to compliment her rocker divorcee look, but failed miserably. As one of the judges put it, her black skirt and long gray blazer made her look like "an office worker from Warsaw, Poland". Christopher decided to make a long version of his winning party dress from the first episode. With a black halter top and layers and layers of volume at the bottom it was a bit disproportionate according to the judges. Althea created a look to match a suit of a blazer and mini skirt. The new look had pants and a voluminous gray sweater that Irina thought Althea stole from her. I'm not sure why the judges were crazy about this look because the pants were not flattering. They were of the big at the tom, skinny at the bottom, harem variety. The sweater really did look cozy though. Logan decided to up the ante and created a mini dress with zipper details. The collar was controversial, all zippers, which Althea thought resembled hers from a different challenge a little too much. Carol Hannah was struggling about whether to make yet another dress, and in the end decided to do just that. It was a flowy dress with pockets, very cute.

Winners: The winners circle included Irina, Althea, and Carol Hannah. I'm not really sure who I was rooting for here, I liked both sweaters. All three judges loved Althea's outfit and so she walked away the winner.

Losers: Christopher, Logan, and Gordana were in the bottom. I really thought Gordana would be going home. Her look was both boring and ugly. I was wrong, Logan was the one asked to leave. His look was too futuristic.

Project Runway Recap: Epsiode 10

Only a few weeks until we know who's going to be showing in the tents! This week the designers were asked to create a look inspired by one of the places that inspires Michael Kors. So what is Michael Kors inspired by? Predictably many places in the US, Palm Beach, Sante Fe, Hollywood, New York, Aspen, and a couple of foreign locals, St. Tropez and Greece.

I'd just like to mention that Greece is one of my all time favorite places, especially the place where the photo was taken, the island of Santorini. I was really excited to see what outfit would be made inspired by the gorgeous photo, right up until Nicolas decided to pick it as his inspiration.

Carol Hannah chose Palm Beach and made a very pretty maxi dress in a palm tree print. Irina made a three piece look to represent Aspen, a pair of ski pants, cowl neck sweater with a cut out in the back and a faux fur vest. Christopher wanted to make an impression so badly but only saw sky and dirt in Sante Fe so his fabric choices made the dress look dowdy. Gordana spent most of her time making an exquisite jeweled necklace and then designed a simple grey dress to represent chic New York. Logan went for the young Hollywood look with simple jeans, tank and a vest, nothing special but not bad. I really liked Althea's shorts and sheer blouse and would definitely wear that in St. Tropez but it was strange to hear her say no one has done anything like it before.

This brings me to Nicolas. I don't understand how looking at the photo on the left, he could have made the outfit on the right. It has absolutely nothing to do with Greece, and even if you take that out of the equation it's still just a simple shirt and pants.

Winners: Carol Hannah, Gordana, and Irina were in the top three. I thought either Carol Hannah or Gordana would win, but instead Gordana was told to be more confident about her designs and overly confident Irina won the challenge.

Losers: Logan, Christopher and Nicolas were in the bottom three. All of them didn't take enough of a risk but in Nicolas' case he also totally missed the mark since his look had nothing to do with the "inspiration". Though I was upset about the Greece outfit being screwed up I was happy that Nicolas was finally kicked off.

These are just some items that popped out from my weekly new arrivals review. More and more I'm seeing cute skirts which really helps in bringing variety to a wardrobe. Gryphon and Brian Reyes are just two that I've singled out but there are plenty more.

I love this dress by Jenni Kayne, it's cute and I can picture more than one 90210/Gossip Girl cast member going for it.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 9

It's Episode 9 and both Gordana and Nicolas are still here, and Gordana has immunity so she's sticking around no matter what. Ok, now that I've vented here's what happened in this episode. If you're a fan of sequins, beading, and sparkles in general this was the episode for you. The designers had to create a stage costume for Christina Aguilera! As inspiration they first got a glance at the glamorous outfits Bob Mackie had created over the years for Cher, Tina Turner and other divas.

Great, another chance for the designers to step over the boundaries and really make something fun and outrageous. At least that's what I thought. I was of course wrong because the results weren't quite as exciting. There were quite a few gowns with sequins thrown in courtesy of Shirin, Gordana, Althea, and Carol Hannah. Carol Hannah's dress was a black column with just the right amount of sparkle and feathers, truly well made, though I don't see it as a stage costume since the model could barely walk in it. On the short end were Christopher, Nicolas, Irina, and Logan. Christopher made a corset and hot shorts that were reminiscent of Moulin Rouge but didn't quite rise to that standard according to the judges. Christina seemed to like it actually but the judges shut her up. I appreciated for at least being different. Nicolas' dress was total deja vu of the ice queen dress but the short version, it reminded me a lot of Roberto Cavalli dresses.

As a side note: I think Nicolas and Irina are competing for whose bitchier. I'm excited to see who wins this battle :)

Winners: Top marks were given to Nicolas, Carol Hannah and Althea for making a silver sequined dress with a pattern that would definitely stand out on stage. Carol Hannah won her first challenge which I was happy about because she has definitely been consistent in making beautiful clothes.

Losers: Gordana's dress was a white monstrosity but she had immunity so couldn't be kicked off. As a result the bottom three included Christopher, Logan and Shirin. Logan was the only one to use a print but the zebra print and fur shawl made the model look like a Flinstone going to a rock concert. Shirin's dress was a disaster of a gown with different shiny fabric to make for a fuller skirt. In the end Shirin was the one asked to leave.

Grey is the new black...purple is the new black...navy is the new black...I'm waiting for the moment that someone says pink is the new black. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that black is the new black, and these looks prove nothing beats it, especially when you add a little leather.

This is such a cute top from Alice + Olivia. The capped sleeves give it a great edge and it looks fantastic with jeans, skirts or pants.

Leggings are a continuing trend this year. These ones have latex panels that add a little something extra. I have to admit I'm a big fan of leggings and hope the trend will stay strong because it's not very often that something so comfortable is sexy as well ;)

To add to this rocker vibe is a pair of platforms that will make you tower over everyone. I like the buckle details. Skinny jeans or tights would be a perfect match for these booties.

I couldn't end the post without a couple of dresses. If your fashion icon is Posh Spice then the Rock & Republic mini is perfect. Sheer overlay and leather make for an interesting neckline. The LifewithBird dress is on the opposite end of the spectrum. It's still short, but has a blousy top and full skirt. If you want to look cute but not like you're trying too hard this dress is perfect. It'd go great with a pair of funky shoes and a clutch or a bag on a long chain.

Paris Fashion Week: Spring 2010

There's something special about Paris fashion week. Maybe because the phrase "french chic" has been drilled into our heads. One thing however is clear, in Paris we finally saw a trend, and one that I find quite charming: the short full skirt. Chanel, Dior, Alexander McQueen all took part. The most visually stunning show was definitely Alexander McQueen. The surreal prints were out of this world. Lindsay Lohan made her fashion debut, and though I'm not including the Ungaro line, there are lots of collections that are more worthwhile, I do hope this is a jumping off point to better things.

Alexander McQueen
All I can say is wow! I couldn't turn away from the prints Alexander McQueen created for his collection. This is an optical illusion I want to be part of. Not only are the prints mesmerizing but I love all the shapes of these dresses as well.

Christian Dior
Did I mention the short twirly skirt trend? :)

Yves Saint Laurent
While most collections were colorful and fun, YSL showed us the serious side of fashion. If only the pilgrims saw how their beloved collars were interpreted in this collection.

John Galliano
Here's another man who seamlessly molds fashion and art. While not as outrageous as his previous collection it was still quite the spectacle. This collection was an ode to old Hollywood glamor, which I can especially see in the embroidered dress below.

Stella McCartney
Yes, it's the same skirt again. Also love this robe like dress. It was a collection of wearable pieces, simple clothes, with a bit of a 70's feel.

Chanel
So I've listened to Rachel Zoe and her troop drivel on about their love of Chanel and it must have seeped in because I love this collection. The tweed jackets, the adorable dresses, and that hat, all set in the French countryside. The only thing I didn't understand were the clogs, I haven't seen those since the early 90's and I was hoping that was the last time I'd see them.

Louis Vuitton
It's hard to look at clothes when there's a giant Afro in front of you, but that's exactly what Marc Jacobs expected us to do. Our preppy school girl has many day looks to choose from and accessories to match, a messenger bag and furry shoes.

Miu Miu
A testament to how a print can fuse together a collection, and make it feel connected. I liked the interesting sleeves, the bold collars, the focused color palette.

Jean Paul Gaultier
Remember the movie "Fifth Element"? This felt very much like a continuation on that futuristic theme. What if we had to wear a evening gown in 3019? Why not this orange number?

Nina Ricci
It seems like several designers want a place in Lady Gaga's closet because otherwise I can't explain the prevalence of models walking around in basically underwear. That said, it is cute underwear and I like the sheer dress with an even sheerer cape.

Valentino
I have always felt that Valentino was my mother's kind of fashion house. Even when Valentino himself left, the spirit lived on in previous collections, but this is a step forward and an appeal to a younger audience. I'm not sure if this is wise, if Valentino is going to lose it's clientele but I certainly appreciate it more.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 8

I have to admit I got excited when I saw the new "models" coming out for Project Runway's latest episode. These were real women in their wedding dresses. The challenge: to recreate the wedding dress into something modern and stylish.

Once the designers picked their brides, mostly in order of fabric their dress contained, it was time to talk to their clients to see what the brides wanted. Most interesting was Shirin's girl who wanted a Las Vegas stage dress , something Shirin was sure would land her in the bottom. Another interesting point, several designers dyed the dresses to a darker color. Irina's was a favorite, her lace dress complimented her client incredibly well. I also though Carol Hannah did a great job with a tulle dress. Christopher made a pretty shapeless bubble dress that did not feel age appropriate. There were two pants looks provided by Nicolas and Logan, both hideous.

Winners: Irina, Gordana and Shirin were at the top. The judges loved the pattern Shirin stitched on her white mini dress. I did not understand this decision, it was an ok dress, but nothing to write home about. I thought Carol Hannah should have been in the top instead. Gordana's dress was a strapless rocker chic number and suited her client, and the judges rewarded her with a win.

Losers: Logan, Christopher and Epperson were at the bottom, which is really sad because I like all three. I have no idea why Nicolas was not on this list, his pants and top were the opposite of fashion. Logan's was the most poorly made of the three, the pants still needed to be tailored and the vest/shirt was a mess. Epperson made an A-line dress with details around the waist that reminded Heidi of Oktoberfest. Maybe it looked worse in person but I didn't have such a violent reaction to Epperson's design. Sadly he was the one asked to leave.

Milan Fashion Week: Spring 2010

Bright colors and form fitting clothes, that's what I'm used to seeing in Milan. That's probably why my favorite collection was actually quite different from that aesthetic: Bottega Veneta. I loved it so much I couldn't choose which looks to include.

Dolce & Gabbana
The contrast between the Dolce & Gabbana collection and it's extremely focused D&G is humongous. Florals, lace, power suits and leopard prints were all present here. I thought the floral shorts were cute, though I don't see myself wearing them :).

Bottega Veneta
I can't say enough about this gorgeous collection. Peaceful, delicate, concentrating on interesting shapes which was accentuated all the more by the colorless palette through most of the collection. Suits, summer dresses, beach outfits, gowns, there was something for everyone.

Versace
I have to say I love the incorporation of metallics in Versace's collection. I could easily see myself wearing the white blouse and silver skirt. The long dress looks a bit futuristic, but at least it's a play on the usual dress with a slit.

Roberto Cavalli
Flowy dresses in pastel and flower patterns dominated the collection. I can't say this was a favorite, some of the designs seemed ill fitting.

Pucci
If I was hanging out on the French or Italian Riviera and wanted some very glamorous beach/lounge wear, Pucci's collection would be at the top of my list of designers. I adore the lemon print look, now I just need to work towards those abs!

Prada
Moving on from the very severe Fall collection, Prada went towards minis and silk fabrics. The color palette is still on the dark side but it is a decidedly more delicate look.

Moschino
Fun shapes and flirty fabrics. The cherry top and watermelon skirt is making me hungry :) The only thing I don't understand are the gold sandals.

Missoni
It's always interesting to see what Missoni comes up with because it is synonymous with knits. There were lots of pastels in this collection, lots of layers, and some comfy looking pants.

Marni
Vertical and horizontal stripes are not meant to go together except in Marni's collection which fuses them in a single pair of tights that appeared on almost every model that walked down the runway. The headscarf added to the muted color scheme make me think this girl is headed to work on the farm.

D&G
Ready for the rodeo? I'm not either, but there's something very flirtatious and fun about this collection. Get ready for denim, leather and eyelets galore.

Fashion Matches: Best Matches From This Week's New Arrivals

It's time for new arrivals! My favorite find, two mini dresses, one much easier on the pocket than the other. On the other side of the spectrum: two awesome oversize looks.

The first thing that struck me about this Tsumori Chisato sweater is the beautiful color. The delicate metallic threads remind me of the sunrise. I love the humongous bat-like sleeves too.

As if we needed more evidence that the 80's are back, here are tight, short, mini dresses in bright prints. The Julien Macdonald is an extreme version complete with accentuated shoulders and gems sprinkled over the dress. The Diane von Furstenberg is more subdued if that's possible, ruched with a floral print.

I like dresses that leave something to the imagination but are still sexy. This Geren Ford dress accomplishes just that, it's short so you can show off your legs but has a looser fit.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 7

There is always a challenge to see whether the designers can make something commercially successful and that's what this week's Project Runway was all about. Macy's line INC line was looking to add something blue to it's collection. As usual each designer had to pitch ideas for two looks with five contestants chosen to make the clothes while partnering up with another designer. Althea, Irina, Christopher, Carol Hannah and Louise were the lucky chosen ones.

Althea's idea was to create a suit and a high waisted pants look. She partnered up with Logan and they did an ok job, which reflected their status in the middle of the pack. The navy suit idea was great, but the skirt was way too short, and the pants did not fit that well though I could clearly see INC having such a pair as part of their collection.

Irina partnered up with Gordana creating a flowy patterned dress and work outfit with an aqua blouse. The judges were impressed by the dresses neckline and that Irina added the blue tints to the fabric. Heidi liked the blouse Gordana made as well. Of everything that came down the runway this was my favorite, but that's only because it was a little less boring than the rest.

Christopher and Epperson were not team players and it showed. Each went to Mood, picked a fabric, never thinking if the two designs work well together. The result was a teal silky blouse with too much fabric at the neckline and a shirt dress made of a shiny fabric that as one of the judges put it looked like a table cloth. It's a shame because both Chris and Epperson are strong designers.

Carol Hannah partnered with Shirin and was very confident going into the challenge. Her two looks both had teal jersey tops, one paired with tights and a belt, one paired with a tight pencil skirt. I could see INC carrying these pieces but they did look very low end.

Louise and Nicolas made to dresses that stood out for all the wrong reasons. Both were blue A-line dresses with humongous ruffles in the front. One of the dresses even had a bow on the back.

Winners: Irina and Gordana shared the top with Carol Hannah and Shirin. In the end Irina's dress was announced the winner but not before Gordana complained that Irina didn't give her much direction.

Losers: Louisa and Nicolas shared the bottom with Christopher and Epperson. Poor Christopher was crying, but in the end it was Louisa that was asked to leave. As Heidi put it, Nicolas was very lucky that he had immunity this week.

If you listen to Rachel Zoe there is nothing better than sequins, so I'm going to take this advice to heart. Here are three looks that have one thing in common, they're shiny and glitter in the sun.

If you don't want to go head to toe in sequins here's a good first step. Phillip Lim adds a bit of glamor to the little black dress with a gold sequined trim. It's a fun dress with a 60's vibe.

New York Fashion Week: Spring 2010 Part III

Herve Leger
You always know what to expect from Herve Leger. Lots of bandage dresses that give you no room to breath. The breathing part is still true, but *gasp* there's a full skirt in the mix!

Rebecca Taylor
In my mind Rebecca Taylor is synonymous with elegant looks, often with feminine details like ruffles and beading. This collection is a lot more relaxed, great example of that is the loose fitting gray tee with the red flower print skirt.

Marchesa
The elaborate designs of Marchesa gowns are stunning. I particularly love the pink dress which looks so light and airy it reminds me of cotton candy. Notice the tattoo like printed stockings.

Doo.Ri
Though the makeup was a little bit scary with the gray mortuary lips, I did love the clothes. Not as unique as the embroidered stockings from the Fall collection but equally pretty.

Derek Lam
Bodysuits made a comeback in Derek Lam's collection. I can totally see Lady Gaga walking on the streets in one.

Donna Karan
When I picture in my mind what I would like to dress like at work, this is what I see. Beautiful suits, separates and a great summer dress.

Narciso Rodriguez
Day and night are both so simple for Narciso Rodriguez. White, clean, these are go to looks when you don't want to be overpowered by your clothes.

New York Fashion Week: Spring 2010 Part II

Marc Jacobs
I thought an Harlequin was going to jump out in the middle of Marc Jacobs' collection. Think Leighton Meester from the Met Gala but this time with wider pants and ruffles. It was imaginative, but I will be really curious to see how this will translate when this collection shows up in stores.

Rodarte
Love the tribal elements in Rodarte's collection. The tattoo like sleeves, the uneven edges, there's nothing like Rodarte's designs.

Diane von Furstenberg

Reem Acra
Reem Acra is known for red carpet looks and wedding dresses so I was so pleased to see this collection with more daytime looks. I couldn't help including the yellow gown, the flower print is gorgeous and I can picture this dress flow on a breezy summer day.

Zac Posen
Zac Posen chose intense tropical colors for his collection. I wasn't crazy about the designs, they did not feel fashion forward, though I'm sure there will be plenty of celebs wearing the slinky dresses towards the end of the runway show.

I'm crazy over these cigarette pants. That aside, it was the usual blend of Marc's quirkiness with fun, flirtatious looks. I can't wait to purchase some of these outfits.

3.1 Phillip Lim's collection is a safer version of Rodarte with pleated fabrics that create beautiful patterns. Does anyone else see the resemblance? Rodarte's Spring 2009 collection.

Bibhu Mohaparta
I love the whole collection. The way the fabrics are being used, the textures, the layers, these are wearable clothes that make a statement.

Project Runway Recap: Episode 6

With the show moving to LA it's no wonder many challenges are Cali inspired. This week the designers had to come up with a costume for a particular film genre. The choices: Film Noir, Western, Sci-fi, Period Piece, and Action/Adventure.

Again this was a challenge where the designers could really let their imagination take over and be as outrageous as they wanted to be. I was really happy to see some designers "take it to the next level" as Tim Gunn would say. Film Noir was represented by Irina, Althea and Louisa. Neither one shined though I liked Irina's cape a lot. Louisa thought hers would land her in the top three which is surprising because it was a boring wrap dress that did not feel representative of that era. Western was represented by Epperson and Shirin, and Epperson did an amazing job creating a look that was strong, denim halter with ruffle detail and full skirt, and details like a holster. Sci-fi was picked by Ramon and Nicolas. Ramon scrapped his design at the last moment because the model looked like Kermit, unfortunately that did not give him enough time to complete a well made dress. Nicolas went for the "Snow Queen" look, long white dress with what looked like snowflakes off the shoulders. Gordana and Christopher went for period piece, with Gordana making an ode to the flapper era and Christopher choosing Victorian. Though his dress was not true to Victorian fashion it was truly stunning, the gathered neckline, the black belt, the skirt, a modern interpretation that's worthy of praise. Finally Carol Hannah and Logan created similar black looks for action/adventure.

Winner: The top 3 looks were Epperson's, Christopher's and Nicolas'. I was rooting for Christopher and from the comments he was getting from the judges, and especially after a reference to Nicolas' choice of fabric as cheap I thought he was sure to win. Sadly Nicolas was chosen for the best design which means his bad talking is here for at least another 2 episodes.

Loser: Gordana, Ramon and Louisa were in the bottom. Gordana and Louisa were there because they didn't take enough for a risk, while Ramon was there because his dress was poorly made. I though Louisa would go home, instead the judges kicked off Ramon, sad since he only faltered this one time and his look was the most exciting of the three.

Fashion Matches: Best Finds from This Week's Arrivals

I'm loving all the party looks that have appeared this week so here's the cream of the crop. I wanted to include the Camilla and Marc dress last week but it got sold out, so I was really happy to see it again, and the Alexander Wang is quite original.

The best part of this Camilla and Marc dress is how versatile it is. It can be worn with a leather jacket and booties, or some delicate heels for a completely different look. The same dress also comes in black.

Camilla and Marc Strapless Tiered dress $550

I don't know what it is about this dress, but it reminds me a little bit of the Matrix. Maybe it was the mesh, or the exposed zipper. There's no denying this is a unique look, but at the end of the day it's a body conscious mini dress with a flattering neckline. It's always great to see a designer accomplish both successfully.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is the Jay Godfrey dress. It's bright pink, has a bit of a 60's feel to it with the big shoulders. The big black belt really accentuates the waist.

Project Runway recap: Episode 5

One of my favorite TV fashion moments is Carrie strutting down the street in a Dior newspaper print dress (which is back by the way in the new SATC). That's why I was particularly excited about the challenge this week on Project Runway. The designers were asked to make clothes from, you guessed it, newspaper, the LA Times to be exact.

This was a real opportunity to make their creativity shine. I was really surprised that most designers chose printed pages rather than going for the more dramatic black and white. There were a few looks that broke through. Logan's blue contour was beautiful, Carol Hannah had a long crinkled red gown, nothing special but different. Christopher created the second long gown, his had a metallic bustier and christmas tree looking skirt. Shirin designed a dress whose skirt was very similar to Project Runway's last winner Leanne, Epperson created an ode to the Kimono. The most original was Irina's who was the only one to not do a dress. Instead she made a trench coat with "faux" fur.

Nicolas makes me angrier every week. Not only did he have some strange explanation for his inspiration for a basic dress, apparently it was a grunge look, sadly nobody noticed, but he was also knocking everyone else, calling out who should be leaving. One of his targets was Johnny, who's another character. When Tim Gunn came to make some suggestions he basically told Johnny his dress looked like a kid made it, so Johnny scrapped it. His story for the judges? Apparently steam fell on a gorgeous dress and he had to throw it out. Why lie on a taped show?

Winner: The top three included Christopher, Althea and Irina. I'm not sure why there was so much excitement about Althea's dress, it was strapless, fitted, there was a print, much like was the case with the other dresses. Eva Longoria Parker was the guest judge and she loved the bodice of Christopher's dress and Irina's coat. In the end Irina won, I was very happy.

Losers: It was between Gordana, Nicolas and Johnny. Gordana's dress didn't seem any worse than the other dresses that were safe. The consensus about Nicolas' pattern choice was that it looked like a bug was attacking. Naturally as Johnny was making his excuse, Nicolas had to do an eye roll. When Heidi asked what that was about he threw Johnny under the bus. I hate people like that, I'm really hoping Nicolas doesn't stick around long.
